Artwork Description:
This deconstructivist painting was inspired by a power figure in contemporary art collecting. Chiao just captured the essence of a wealthy, beautiful, and powerful woman. This portrait is the most successful and surviving painting from a whole series of portraits of powerful art collectors which was started by Nicholaas Chiao with the idea to attract their attention to his work. However, the portraits were not authorized and this was a bad idea, revealing purely commercial perspectives seen by the artist in the realization of the series. The portrait of AG Nicholaas Chiao showed more personal relation to the sitter and therefore this portrait succeeded much more than other portraits from ArtNews' list of Power 100 Art Collectors.
