Artwork Description:
In approximately 2016 artist Nicholaas Chiao created the diptych "Captured Soldier", with brick-red as the dominant color. Red Self portrait is continuing to develop a similar subject in portraiture and explores feelings of nearby dangers fortified by the reddish, hellish gloom of the portrait. This work could be somewhat in conversation with the early portraits by Lisa Yuskavage when she used nearly cubist treatment of portrait models. Nicholaas quite regarded Yuskavage for her early successes in portraiture and nude.
