Artwork Description:
This painting addresses a certain gap in the Christian religion: whilst being a global world religion, Christianity never had Africans or Blacks as Popes and never regarded matriarchs on the top positions as well. This painting deals with Diego Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X, an inspiration for Francis Bacon and many other portrait painters as a starting point. The Pope is depicted screaming, due to the weight of his position and the enormous amount of fearful and horrible events in our troubled society. Wars, conflict, poverty, Global Warming - more than enough for a small planet. Yet the inner strength of the Pope and certain hope are still obvious because the screaming face relies on a strong and confident-looking body of the sitter on the throne.
