Artwork Description:
Another version of the Black Pope painting. This painting deals with Diego Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X, an inspiration for Francis Bacon and many other portrait painters as a starting point. The Pope is depicted as a screaming Black Man, which is perhaps due to the weight of his Papal position and to symbolize an enormous amount of horrible events in our troubled society. Wars, conflict, poverty, Global Warming - more than enough to fear it. Yet the inner strength of the Pope is still obvious because a screaming head relies on the strong and confident-looking body of the sitter on the throne.
