This portrait oscillates between intrigue and horror, its subject dissected and reassembled in the cubist tradition, fragmented and seen from multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Inspired by Agnes Gund, the empress of the art world, the sitter remains elusive, her identity obscured by abstraction. Chiao's series of unauthorized portraits, produced in 2012-2013, embodies his ambivalent engagement with power and recognition. He was driven by a desire to explore the dynamics of influence within the art world. Chiao saw these portraits not just as artistic ventures but as visual essays questioning the distribution of power and the ever-shifting reputation landscapes in contemporary art.
